Applying the final lights on the flesh
The off-white colour is a mixture of titanium white with a point of yellow ochre. The mixture must be dry, to obtain very precise lines, and you should use a fine good tiped brush.
If it is the first time you apply the final lights on a carnation, take a good look at the position of these on a recent icon or on the icon below... |
The highlight of Christ's hair
To carry out this highlight you need to follow the three following steps. The strength of the highlight increases step by step:
- For the first highlight, prepare a mixture of red ochre (80%) and yellow ochre (20%) and highlight the locks of the hair with a wide line. You can do it using the brushing technique that is: apply the colour dry enough with your brush or the puddle technique by floating. Let it dry completely and then apply the second highlight.
- For the second highlight, add 50% of yellow ochre to your first mixture. Divide each lock into two thin lines, even the curls. These lines should be precise, therefore, use a mixture that is almost dry.
- For the last highlight, apply yellow ochre on the prominent parts of the locks. Again, use a mixture that is almost dry.

The highlight of the Mother of Gods veil and dress
This highlight can also be done in three steps:
|

|
First, adjust the highlight itself with a mixture of ultramarine blue, a touch of viridian and a hint of burnt umber, for example, to darken a little bit the tint. The veils circumference must be darkened, particularly the part next to the maphorions braid. |

|
Then, apply the first wide highlight with a mixture of white lead and a touch of cobalt blue. Once applied and dry, you can stump it to soften the transition between tints. |

For the last highlight, apply a mixture of titanium white with a touch of cobalt blue. The colour must be very dry when applied. |
