La Mère de Dieu de Vladimir

Colouring the flesh

For the icon of Mother of God of Vladimir, we obtained a greenish flesh colour composed of:

- red ochre,
- a touch of yellow ochre,
- veronese green,
- and a touch of ultramarine blue.

Add a good proportion of egg emulsion and some water to the mixture. The colour has to be solid enough to withstand the coming highlights. To see what the proportions are, have a look at the video below:

Apply the puddle all over the flesh, avoid going over the areas already coloured – otherwise stains may appear - and make sure you blend well the paint each time you reload the brush. The heavier colours in the mixture tend to settle down at the bottom of the pallet modifying the composition of the colour each time you reload the brush.

Colouring the background of the icon

To colour the background, use a mixture of Naples yellow (substitute) with a touch of yellow ochre. Add a good quantity of egg but less than for the flesh. First, it is better to make some testing on a white practice board and then apply the mixture using the puddle technique: Naples yellow becomes very whitish after drying, and these preliminary tests will help you to find the good proportion of yellow ochre needed...
