The first highlight of the flesh

Prepare a mixture of yellow ochre (2/3) and red ochre (1/3). Don't add too much egg to the mixture to get a fine layer of highlight and to avoid egg haloes around the highlighted areas. Add a bigger quantity of water than for the basic colour of the flesh.

Look at the original and determine the areas where you need to apply the puddle. Apply the first spot of colour and immediately extend the puddle by pulling the pigments towards the clearest parts of the highlight.

On the opposite picture, the puddle area will be extended towards the cheekbone while drawing the outline of the lower eyelid. Then, this puddle will be extended towards the bottom of the cheek while pulling the pigments upwards, towards the top of the face.

Concerning the neck, the first layer of the highlights will disregard the hollow between the collarbones.

Apply first the puddle in the angle below the ear and extend it gradually downwards while pulling the pigments upwards, towards the ear. Add a bit of water to the mixture when you reach the limit of the collar, in order to soften the transition towards the basic sanquir (proplasmos).

Let the icon dry flat. Do not try ti retouch the puddle before it dries.

Don't forget to do the first highlight of the earlobe, the eyelids and the corner of the eye...

Concerning the hands: push the pigments towards the fingertips and release the drop at the end.

Wait until the puddles are really dry before extending a layer of egg mixed with 50% of water to fix and nourish the colour.
