L'Archange Michel

Before painting...

While working on the coloration of the red garment, stains may have appeared on the hands or the neck, for example... It is important to clean those marks on the hands before lining the flesh. This operation can be done with a scalpel, but be careful not to cut into the levkas. The colour can also be removed with a brush and some water – use a paper handkerchief to collect the dirty water in the brush.
Lining the flesh

Use a brush with a good tip and, if possible, practice first on a photocopy of the drawing before tracing the main parts of the face on the board (the eyes, the nose and the mouth).

The colour of the lines is composed of burnt Siena with a touch of burnt umber. The mixture must be quite dry but with a good proportion of egg to get solid lines.

For the hair, you can trace darker lines than for the face and the hands, by adding a bit of black to the mixture.

When you draw the hands, trace graceful and fine fingers. The fingertips must end in a point on the fingernails and not in an inelegant rounded shape!
