Lining the wings

As for the lines of the red garment, retrace the lines of the wings with the brush. Prepare a mixture of yellow ochre with one third of red ochre. Add a good proportion of emulsion. The mixture must be dry. The lines must be neat and precise. Whenever, after drawing a line, there seems to be a flaw in it – e.g. your brush dripped or the line is in the wrong place – don't hesitate to wash it out and retrace it later. To do this, use a larger brush loaded with clear water, melt it partly or completely, dry your brush and use it to pump the colour. Wipe the brush with a paper handkerchief. Once the levkas dry, retrace the line or the part of the line you erased. Let the drawing dry well before you start colouring the inside using the puddle technique…

Some people have posed questions concerning the choice of pigments, especially regarding yellow ochre. Indeed, some of them have made the following comment: speaking mostly about the highlight of the face - that “it is not the same at home” and that they can't obtain “the same light or the same strength concerning the higlights”. This difficulty is certainly caused by the choice of yellow ochre. A huge quantity of nuances and qualities of this pigment exist on the market, a wide range that goes from the dullest to the most luminous and from the greenest to the redest shades. For our part, we use quite an intense and luminous yellow ochre with light red nuances. This red ochre comes from Zecchi in Florence (ocra gialla No 784). Of course, you can find a yellow ochre with the same characteristics at other manufacturers, but to choose it well, it is highly recommended to compare it with others, and even try it...
