The icon of the Crucifixion, in the Byzantine tradition, represents Christ's victory over death. He is depicted in peaceful resignation, the body extended and resting. His closed eyes evoke death, but he radiates light on the cross, anticipating the Resurrection. On the cross, Christ retains all his majesty, as Saint John Chrysostom said: "I see him crucified, and I call him King."
