The angels are known to us above all by the ministry which they exercise on the terrestrial world. They are the "messengers", sent to announce or to accomplish the will of God. They have to defend the creation against the spiritual powers which seek to cast it into ruin. Hence the warrior-like character that angelic apparitions often take.
The Archangel Michael, chief captain of the celestial powers, presides over the struggle against the forces of the demons.
