Never explicitly described in the Gospels, the moment of the Resurrection cannot be fully represented by an image. Respecting this intention, tradition proposes two icons that evoke the culminating point of the Paschal Mystery: the Descent into hell and the Women at the tomb.
The icon presented here showss a single angel, in accordance with the Gospel of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark. The three women represented here, according to the Gospel of Saint Mark, are Mary, the mother of James, Salome, and Mary Magdalena. The latter is the only one with a halo because of the preponderant role she plays in the Gospel of John.
