Finishing the icon

The haloes
To enable the colour stick to the gold, pass a layer of ox gall on the inscriptions and the circumference of the halo. Prepare a mixture of China red or cadmium red and a little bit of water. Use a fine good tipped brush. To obtain regular and precise lines, several passages of the brush must be done.

The inscription
With the same red colour, colour the inscription in two steps:
- Trace your letters with a fine line to evaluate their position and height.
- Redo each letter, reinforcing its vertical bars, to give rhythm to your writing and, finally, place the contraction signs.

The frame
The colouring of the frame can be done by transparency with a large filbert brush. Prepare a mixture of medium yellow ochre with a lot of water and a bit of emulsion. Load your brush moderately and apply the colour by going around the frame several times. If too many irregular traces appear, repeat the process until you obtain a regular and homogeneous colour.
Finally, with the red colour you used for the calligraphy, trace the red line on the outer edge of the icon. To do that, use superimposed wooden square rulers to help you place your brush two or three centimeters higher than the icon. Guide your brush with the edge of the last wooden square ruler. |
