The first highlight of the red garment

The preparation of the highlight colour is very important here. The first highlight must be very soft and fuse with the other colours. It will be a support and a base for the second and stronger highlight. The colour is composed of white lead, a bit of vermilion red and a touch of yellow ochre. The mixture should be quite liquid, but less than for a puddle.

As you can see on the video opposite, the highlight is done using the brushing technique. Take some colour with the brush and dry it very well before applying it. Pass several times over the areas you want to highlight and come back to them, if necessary, after highlighting other parts. Apply the colour on the clearer areas first and then raise the brush towards the darker parts.

Once dry, the highlight can turn whiter. Therefore, you can pass a layer of egg mixed to 50% of water to nourish and fix the colour. While doing so, you can also stump, as much as possible, the brush traces of this first highlight.
