The first layer of red
Before colouring the red garment, observe well the original to locate the clearer parts of the garment.
The mixture for the puddle is composed of vermilion red with touch of red ochre. If you want to use vermilion red substitute, add a few drops of surgical spirit to the mixture so that the pigment mixes with the water. The mixture must be very liquid to extend the puddle easily and homogeneously.
Apply the puddle step by step: delimit the areas according to the boundaries determined by the lines of the drawing, work on one area at a time to master your progress. Begin the relief of the garment by pulling the pigments in the puddle towards the darker areas – higher density of pigments – but beware not to touch the background with your brush – it would damage the first layer of yellow ochre. Work gently on the surface of the puddle.
