The composition is structured around the Mother and the Child, who are the "center of Presence" in this icon. The size of the Mother of God is increased compared to the other figures, creating what is known in iconography as a "perspective of importance." The child is fully swaddled and turns toward the spectators, inviting them to inner rebirth. The ox and the donkey poke their heads out of their rocky stable and warm the Christ King. The deep blue background and edges emphasize the supernatural light of the blessed Incarnation.
