Icon nb 33

Size : 24 x 30 cm.

Linden board

Gilded halo. Egg tempera.

Icon of the Hodigitria type, the Mother of God Gruzinskaya ("from Georgia") appears to be an inverted variant of the Virgin of Jerusalem.

During the reign of Tsar Michael Romanov (1613-1645), a merchant from Yaroslavl purchased this icon in Persia, where it had been located after the Persian conquest of Georgia. Having been warned by a dream, he donated it to the Krasnogorsk Monastery, near Arkhangelsk. As she performed many miracles, her reputation grew, and several copies were made and venerated.
