Also called "Baptist" as he baptized all those who came to him, and "Forerunner" because he is the "precursor" of Jesus Christ, Saint John is the last Prophet who establishes the link between the Old and the New Testament. Conceived supernaturally, he was the son of the Prophet Zachariah and Elisabeth, a relative of the Virgin Mary. At the age of thirty, he began to preach repentance to prepare the way of the Lord. Great ascetic, he lived in the desert, was "clothed in camel's hair and he fed on locusts and wild honey". Jesus came to him to be baptized and when he saw Christ for the first time, Saint John exclaimed: " Here is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John I, 29). Having baptized Christ, Saint John continued preaching in the Jordan valley.
