In this icon of the Virgin Hodiguitria who "shows the way", Mary's fingers direct our attention to her Son: Jesus who is the only way.
Like all the icons of Mary, it carries the incription "Mother of God" in Greek. On her face and shoulders, the three brilliant stars are the expression of the dogma saying that she is virgin before, during and after the birth of her Son. The gilded tunic of the Child indicates that all is luminous in him. He is, according to the definition of the Council of Nicea: "God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God".
